Originally from West Sumatra, Indonesia, Alief came to Minnesota where they earned a BA in Biology and Mathematics from Carleton College in 2019. While at Carleton, under the mentorship of Rika Anderson, he studied evolution of microbes in the deep sea. They then joined Michael Desai’s group as a PhD student in the Organismic and Evolutionary Biology program at Harvard. He currently investigates the feedback evolution between viruses and adaptive immune system, especially throughout the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Beyond this work, Alief hopes to continue to focus their research on both basic (such as theoretical biology and biochemistry) and applied (such as public health and epidemiology) sciences, with an ultimate goal to help research and public health communities in the Global South face challenges from infectious diseases.
